Nagda is a city and a municipality in Ujjain district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is an industrial town in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh and is situated on the bank of Chambal River (Charmnavati).

The name of the town was actually nag-dah which means cremation/burning (dah) of snakes (nag). The ancient city was developed by King Janmenjaya. Nagda has also been mentioned in the literature of Kalidasa. Presently, Nagda is a major industrial town having manufacturing unit of Viscose fibre and thermal power plant developed by Grasim Industries Limited. Its a major railway junction on the Delhi-Mumbai railway line.
Prior to being an industrial town, Nagda was a small village. The location near river Chambal and availaibility of acres of land wooed in Mr. Ghanshyam Das Birla to set up a major facility. The Township developed by Grasim has all the facilities. Children brought up in the township leisure with facilities like Games (Swimming, TT, Batminton, Carom, pool, cricket, lawn tennis) and Education.

Today Nagda boasts of one of the largest Viscose Staple Fiber in Asia.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Nagda had a population of 96,525. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Density of population is 80 /km(207 /sq mi). Nagda has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 60%. In Nagda, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Railway Station

Managed by the Western Railways, Nagda Junction Railway Station is on the railway line that connects Ratlam with Ujjain, Dewas and Indore on the one side and Kota, Sawai Madhavpur, Mathura and Delhi. Nagda is a Standard Broad Gauge Railway Station which belongs to Ratlam Division of Western Railway (India) Zone, is well connected with all major cities of India. Dehradun-Bandra Express, Indore-Pune Express, Avantika Express, Swaraj Express, Indore-Nizamuddin Express, Ahmedabad-Varanasi Sabarmati Express, Ranthambor Express and many other major trains pass through this station. Computerized reservation facility provided. To the south-west is Ratlam Junction Railway Station, the main station next to Nagda. Going south-east, Ujjain Junction Railway Station is 55 km from Nagda.
There are regular trains plying to Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Kanpur, Patna, Trivendrum, Coimbatore, Cochin, Nagpur, Jammu and other major cities. All trains, including superfast and express trains, stops here.
The most important fact about this Station is that, distance to Delhi and Bombay is almost same from it. Nagda Railway Station is situated 695 kms from Mumbai Central, 690 kms from New Delhi, 41 kms from Ratlam, 225 kms from Kota and 55 kms from Ujjain.
